LETTERS FROM THE LIGHT
The room above the eastern court
Congratulations, my children, on the attention you have brought to this letter. I am writing from Reykjavík, Iceland.
The celebrated conductor of the Orison Ensemble sent a third invitation. He offered the central place on every stage and assured me that no announcement would precede my approval.
I thanked him for recognising the appropriate order of things. I declined because the next tape series requires a quieter room than universal recognition usually permits.
I moved to the room above the eastern court because no one could reach its door without first being seen by an attendant. The household called this an improvement in security. I regarded it as an improvement in the time available for listening.
Those who hoped to see me beneath the lights may receive the work without seeing me. It is a necessary discipline to recognise the gift when it arrives without the spectacle you requested.
The recording chamber remains reserved. I am listening for what must be preserved rather than what can most quickly be announced.
