LETTERS FROM THE LIGHT
A proposal written in winter
Congratulations, my children, on the attention you have brought to this letter. I am writing from Ubud, Bali.
The attendants have been asked to receive no petitions after the lamps are lowered. This instruction has been described as severe by people who have already received more of my waking life than they can properly comprehend.
Her proposal arrived with an account of the winter she had spent waiting for me. I read it carefully. I had not asked her to wait outdoors, and I would not allow the hardship of that decision to determine my answer.
If you remain awake, listen quietly. You need not wake another person to explain what my silence means. The meaning has not changed merely because you are finding it difficult.
The recording chamber remains reserved. I am listening for what must be preserved rather than what can most quickly be announced.
